After a considerable amount of study and investment, a new 3d Ambisonic audio rig has been installed at The Boardroom studio. It consists of eight single driver speakers arranged in a tilted cube. Two in front, two behind, two above, and two below, driven by an 8 channel amp and supplemented by an active sub bass unit [...]
It has all been quiet on the site for a while, sorry for the lack of updates. This has been due to research into Ambisonic recording and reproduction. The intention being to make recordings available in Ambisonic B format, with corresponding Binaural, and conventional surround and stereo mixes also available. These recordings will be performed [...]
“Your Sun” wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, and then some. It’s got the stamp of Derrick Carter all over it, from the lazy, nasal vocal snippets through to the percussive momentum that propels it along. The whole track winds its way through a wormhole of wobbly synths and elastic weirdness, giving the impression that one is listening to a Jew’s harp on crack. [click title to see more]

Right, now we’ve established that one, let’s turn our attention to the matter in hand. The Boardroom’s first release. Radical Majik pricked up my ears a couple of months back, especially the Mental Health Time Bomb. Formed in 2005 by a load of Rotters Golf Club and Klang Electronik associates they’e built out the collective concept to into a effervescence of a new label. With very limited hand printed vinyl of each release of which we have one lovely piece to give away to one lucky R$N subscriber – more details on that below – the label throws their second party next weekend with Paul ‘Leftfield’ Daley and Radioactive Man and E.S.C. live launching the second Boardroom release E.S.C.
We caught up with director Board man, Steve Boardman to talk us through the ethos and background of the collective. (click title to view more)
As it happens ‘Contact’ is the chewier cut of meat in a sandwich of doorstop thickness. A bit of Storm/Jam & Spoon to ‘Master Plan’ is ESC getting back on the warpath, formulating destructive strategies by muttering under its breath before throwing all suggestions to the wall and saying ‘fuck it, let’s get on one’. Balanced nicely on the edge of fear as the passing scenery cowers and bringing a late in the day bout of eye-bulging funk with an acid reflex, this is an absolute stinger. (click title for more)
The favourite has to be Contact – it’s slick, versatile and a bit more subtle than everything else here. This is one that could be played by any techno DJ, from minimal-tech wonders to those with darker tastes, as it’s got a lot of rhythm as well as its seductive bass. But then again we can see the other two doing serious damage at the hands of Billy Nasty or perhaps even Lord Sabre himself. Either way, more good stuff from the Boardroom boys.
